when did you stop dancing?

When did you stop dancing?

After a car accident a week ago, I have been confined to bed rest while my bones heal.  There is only so much you can do with restricted movement and to stop restlessness and irritation setting in, I have turned to the work that I find is salve for my soul.

In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited or depressed, they would ask one of four questions –

When did you stop dancing?

When did you stop singing?

When did you stop being enchanted by stories?

When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?

(Gabrielle Roth).

For my myself and my clients, I find the questions so simple and yet profound.

Where have I gone?

I have found that, as women, we are often so generous and free with ourselves that we give bits of us here, there and everywhere without noticing. This is usually to do with not only being helpful and caring but also with our need to be liked and to fit in with society’s expectations.

One day though, we wake up and realise what’s been happening (perhaps this was because someone asked one the four questions above). We have allowed ourselves to be taken over by those around us. And we ask ourselves, “Where have I gone? What happened over these years?”

We had forgotten that we had a choice.

When you re-connect with yourself again, then you will see that you do have a choice.

Try asking yourself one of the four questions, I’d love to hear your responses.
