The Almost Nearly Confident and Successful Woman
Yes, I know I have been banging on about the Imposter Syndrome for years, and particularly on my blogs one way or another – just dressed up in different guises – and guess what, here I am again!!!
Why do I keep going on about it? Well, yes, it is my story and also so many other women’s (and men’s) story. Somehow we are unable to take ownership of our successes (doesn’t matter what and how we see success) as we are afraid that we are going to be found out that we are not as capable as everyone sees us as. That self-doubt gets in the way of us really stepping into the shoes of knowing how bright and able we are.
It was a fluke
No matter what you’ve done in your life or how accomplished you are with your talents, gifts, qualities, qualifications or not, you don’t feel you deserve the applause you get. And I’m not even talking about fame and fortune or status, it’s according to your own very high standards and you think –
if I can do it, anybody can
I was lucky
right time, right place
I’ve fooled my way through
they’ve made a terrible mistake
they liked me or felt sorry for me
I’ve charmed them somehow
It was a fluke
I’m not as good as they are
I’m not worthy of it
…………………(put your own words here)
Life’s Purpose
And that anxiety somehow remains regardless of however things turn out. You are afraid to step up and step out and shine in your own right as you’d rather keep in your safe comfort box. The thought of being called upon to be stretched even further (whether from the call within or without us) each time causes distress.
This can cause that loss of sparkle as you hide yourself not only from the world – from yourself. By the way, in my opinion, this is your life’s purpose to re-own these talents or gifts so that you can freely show and share of yourself.
Is there anything I can do?
Yes, it really is possible to unlearn the self-limiting thinking that feeds those Imposter feelings. It is about you taking the risk of allowing your vulnerability to be allowed to be visible to yourself and others. You can then see yourself in all your strengths and limitations, and not be ashamed of any part of you. You can be Imperfectly Perfect – be Comfortable being You. And how do I know that? Quite simply it is because that was me and this is why I continue to do this work to enable you to take Ownership of Yourself.
I am a straight-talking, warm, challenging mature woman, with a quirky sense of Glaswegian humour, who knows that there is no magic wand, and that it takes determination to change and transform to be the best you can be. So when you decide that it’s the time to face your fear of being found out, sign up for information on my Autumn Self-Discovery Day. As you find out where your self-doubt came from, you will begin to own that you ARE A CONFIDENT AND SUCCESSFUL WOMAN as you re-connect with your Inner Confidence.
In fact, why don’t you sign up here!!
Thanks Irene, always so inspiring. And so true. Getting where you want is hard work, but oh so worth it. And usually it’s on a curvy road, with sometimes surprising choices or surprising outcomes of just a small sidestep choice. Not knowing is part of it, and reaching out, trying something new. For those thinking of joining your day, I can warmly recommend Irene as teacher, guide and co-traveller. Always with a warm and, at times challenging, heart
Best of luck!
I am delighted with what you say about me and my work – thank you, Gunilla. Also for the lovely picture you have painted about the journey we all have to make in life. xxx
