Rubbish – I Say
This is my personal rant in response to something I read on Facebook recently (via Business Insider Deutschland) that ‘people who always run late are more successful and creative’. To this, I say quite simply, ‘Rubbish’!
This article then goes on to say that ‘Being late isn’t a sign of disrespect’. Again for me this is simply a cop-out and supports bad manners.
Not as a rule
Before I go any further with my rant here, I do want to qualify it by saying that I am talking about those who are never on time – those who are chronically late. I am not talking to those who are occasionally late for genuine reasons. There is a difference.
I will now return to the ‘being late isn’t a sign of disrespect’. Yes, I know it could be said that their lateness doesn’t mean they want to annoy those who more or less are always on time, or that they think they are entitled to being late.
It may be that they do have genuine reasons for their habitual lateness and I can understand this happening on occasions. I am willing to overlook the fact that on occasions, I (and others) may –
Miss the beginning of the movie
Have to put up with the ‘shshsing and grunts’ as we squeeze past in the cinema/theatre
Have to re-arrange other diary commitments
Be late for my own next arrangements
Be irritated you don’t look at your diary,
haven’t checked on petrol, money or whatever beforehand
But I do see it as a sign of lack of respect when it continually happens.
Responsibility
I am no longer willing to be the adult in relationships and to take responsibility for timekeeping. I also find it unprofessional in a business relationship.
It may be that you are fine with your being continually lateness – I am not. I would prefer that you also take responsibility and at least show you can do it and are not always a child.
I have no problem taking life lightly and enjoy ‘stopping and smelling the roses’ – taking time out and having fun – laughing and crying at life’s craziness, and I prefer being considerate of those in my life – whether personal or professional – and being punctual.
When I ran my Supervision Groups in Stockholm, part of our Contract was Timekeeping over the modules. On the one occasion, I was maybe 5 minutes late, they clapped and cheered. I had to laugh and say that, as I was normally on time, I was allowed the odd occasion to be a little late.
Balance
It’s all about having the balance of going with the flow and being on time. I am not saying that you have to plan life down to the last detail. As I have on the back of my Business Card – ‘Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans’ (John Lennon), it is not always easy and there are curve balls that take us off-track.
Just so you know, I did make a comment on the article, and this blog is my response to what I read as ‘making excuses and justification‘ in the article.
