My blog this week is based on my experience when I was in Intensive Care at a London hospital. As I wasn’t expected to live, the doctors and nurses obviously worked damn hard to keep me alive.
I don’t remember much at all – no light at the end of the tunnel, flashbacks, or anything like that. I’m sorry to report that for me it was nothing like we read about!
The one thing I do remember though is that I remember saying to myself “I can’t take this anymore. I just want to go to sleep/die/let go/ give-up.” I just knew that I’d had enough.
I obviously wasn’t listened too as I am still alive and thriving today – a vibrant, healthy woman. My Consultant said that I was thrown back – not wanted!
- So, what are you saying about you and life?
- What word fits for you in your life right now?
Life is about connecting to your vibrancy and creativity, to the spiritual aspect of it. Sometimes you have to say “No” before you can say “Yes”, which is what I obviously did.
I’m using spiritual as “A connection with Self and the Mystery of Life” (William Bloom’s definition).
You don’t need to have cancer to start to really take your life seriously and to perceive its beauty. On the contrary, the closer you are to your own values and the more sensitive you are to the vibrant beauty of existence, the more chances you have of benefitting fully from life.
Every person is unique, what matters above all else is nourishing the desire to live. Some will do it by participating in a choir, watching comedies, writing, running workshops, more involvement with grandchildren, climbing mountains, sailing the seas and so the list goes on.
You can choose where you want to start with whatever brings more meaning and awareness into your life. It is to touch the essence of life, to find a completeness and peace that makes it more beautiful.
It’s not what you do differently that’ll change your life. It’s what you believe about yourself.
Remember You Are amazing!

Really love this Irene: the closer you are to your own values and the more sensitive you are to the vibrant beauty of existence, the more chances you have of benefitting fully from life. I too ended-up in hospital 14 years ago unexpectedly which completely made me reflect on my on life. Some people look within, for others it is always a reason to play the victim. We are both lucky to have chosen a life of fulfilment. Thanks for another great blog.
