HAPPINESS – WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT??
“Most people are about as happy in life as they make up their minds to be” Abraham Lincoln
I’ve found in my time that I’ve usually said to myself – “When I do this, get there, have this or that – then I know I will be happy”. Do you know what I am talking about?
Elusive pot of gold
I’ve realised that I’ve always been waiting, always searching for that elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I have been wanting it to be a ‘something’ or even a ‘someone’ if I’m honest. I’ve been saying to myself consciously or unconsciously, ‘One day I’ll find it, or him or her and when I do, I will be happy and my life will all fall into place’.
Moments of Happiness
Oh yes, I am not saying that you can’t have those moments or days of happiness when you feel happy because of happenings in your life – big or small. Because you can! For me, today someone cancelled, and a lovely friend unexpectedly could manage to come to my house, and I felt happy. I still have a smile on my face now from our ramblings and our laughter, thank Nicky (www.nickyclaydon.co.uk).
Magic Wand
Would I have felt that happiness if my friend hadn’t come, I don’t know – probably not All I do know is that however much you and I try, we won’t suddenly have someone wave that magic wand and we will be happy forever.
Why?
Why? Because happiness is a state of being. It’s internal and when you and I are able to connect to this place, we are able to embrace and become ourselves. Coming from this internal way of being (and it is not always easy, I can assure you!!), you will be treating yourself with acceptance and respect. This is what I have found out in my many years of working with people (and for myself) as when you value yourself, then you will know that you are precious regardless of outer happenings. You will soften and smile at the craziness of life’s ups and downs and the rainbow of feelings you have inside.
This is what I’ve learned with regard to Happiness
- Don’t take life so seriously
- Keep your sense of humour and hold it as lightly as you can.
- Remember the saying “This too will pass”
- Remember to smile – if only because it uses more muscles to do this
- Say ‘I Love You’ to yourself every day and mean it
- Retain your curiosity as it’ll keep you young in mind and spirit
- Take 5 deep breaths when angry and then be ready to respond
- Also allow yourself to scream, cry or shout when necessary
- Share your opinions and allow others to do the same
- Keep an open mind
- Don’t give up on yourself or life
- Remember smiles and compliments are free so give them wholeheartedly
- Don’t use technology or work to hide from yourself or others
- Follow your intuition
So why don’t you take the risk and be the YOU you’ve known somewhere you are – yourself – as this is where happiness lies and that’s what it is all about for me!!

Love this post and going through your list I find myself a bit stuck in this one “Don’t use technology or work to hide from yourself or others”. I can avoid myself and others quite well by staring at a screen – then something like this pops up and I’m reminded it’s not such a good idea. Thank you x
I’m delighted, Kae, that you have the awareness of why something you do, might not always be a good idea. Thank you for your comments xx
