Changing Times
Well what can I say except here in the U.K., we have gone through a tremendous change – out of the E.U., – which will have repercussions whatever else happens with the E.U. too.
Hence my choice for my blog this week!!
Nothing Lasts
I want to start with the fact that there is a truth that says – Nothing Lasts – and when you ignore this, it can bring about a lot of suffering.
Why?
It comes from you and me clinging or hanging onto things so tightly – old ideas, beliefs, habits, jobs, people, homes, success, money and even relationships – so much so that we are taken aback or even shocked when someone leaves us, moves away, does something different, made redundant and so on.
Most of us want to be happy and avoid suffering so we close our eyes and cling onto what we want to see or know. We go into denial at the possibility of change – and even what can be seen as good changes!
Fear of Change
You and I may fight against any changes and ideas, and don’t accept that change happens whether we want it to or not. Even when we are praying for the change to happen, we can still be fearful as we don’t know the end result. For some, it is about wanting to pull the duvet over their head and saying to themselves that when I wake up it won’t have happened – it was a bad dream!! It takes a lot of strength (no wonder exhaustion comes in) to hold on to the status quo. It takes even more strength to let go of what you can’t change – how many times you try!!!
Yes, all of us have an innate sense of fear when embarking on change. It is a journey into the unknown and we don’t know what the outcome will be and that is what makes it frightening – whether valid or not. Change also involves emotional turmoil whether positive or negative and involves loss and uncertainty. You and I were being asked to take a risk by getting up off our backsides and voting honestly.
AND then there is that wonderful moment when you look through the eyes of courage and see that change can be exciting and so full of life even if we still don’t know the final outcome.
Courage
What I’m talking about here is that having courage doesn’t mean you’re not afraid. It means that, in spite of your fear, hesitation and digging your heels in, you take a deep breath and go ahead anyway. It also takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe in when perhaps all around you are making the opposite choice and even denigrating those who oppose them.
Choice
I have heard many people say – ‘I am in charge of my life because I’m not afraid of change and so I’ll always be in control and have power’.
And I want to say– ‘It’s not true – as you are not!! What you are in charge of is your response to whatever is happening in your life. You are in control of the choices you make and that’s all. That then is the power you have whether you are afraid of change or not!
You have the choice of –
- deciding which decision is a risk and which isn’t
- deciding which are the risks into the unknown
- deciding to stay in your comfort zone
Being alive is a risk. In fact everything is a risk!
It’s a risk where you are in your life right now just as much as it’s a risk to step into unfamiliar territory.
You don’t always see that the choice is always yours – to vote or abstain as in our referendum. You cannot blame others when the outcome is not as you wanted!
Finally, you’ll never know all the answers. And sometimes we just have to jump! As is said, ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’.
